teyoweratá:se references the Haudenosaunee creation story and in particular the role of the Four Winds, Kayér:i Nikawerá:ke. The title of this work, teyoweratá:se, means twisting, turning, rotating winds and is used to describe a tornado or hurricane. Rather than it being about destruction, this word speaks directly to notions of balance and renewal, primary concepts within Haudenosaunee ontology. Although the winds represented in this installation are perpetually locked circling one another in static form, the forms are animate as the slightest motion adds subtle movement to the discs. As in my other suspended installations, the threads that extend to the floor reference the relationship between earth and sky.

Created for the exhibition, Written on the Earth at the McIntosh Gallery in partnership with the Northern Tornados Project (NTP) in the Faculty of Engineering at Western University (London, Ontario).

teyoweratá:se parle du rôle des Kayér:i Nikawerá:ke, les Quatre vents, qui font partie de l’enseignement de la création Haudenosaunee. Le titre de cette œuvre, teyoweratá:se, décrit une tournade et se traduit à « vents qui tournent ». Plutôt que de miser sur la destruction que ce phénomène météorologique puisse engendrer, ce descriptif souligne les idées d’équilibre et le renouvellement. Ce sont des concepts de base dans l’ontologie Haudenosaunee. Bien que les vents représentés dans cette installation soient figés dans une composition fixe, tout mouvement d’air puisse provoquer leur animation. Comme dans mes autres installations suspendues, les fils qui touchent le plancher font référence à la relation entre la terre et le ciel.
